Keep Cell Phone Number

With wireless local number portability (WLNP), you can get a new cell phone with a new service provider and keep your same cell phone number. When ordering your cell phone online, it's as a simple as selecting the "box" stating "Keep my Number", then completing the information. One thing to note, Number Portability is only allowed when switching carriers. As of this date and prior, due to the Cingular/AT&T merger, it is not possible to transfer your number between these two carriers.

Number "porting" (keeping your cell number) can take three hours or longer to process. You don't need to spend an entire afternoon in a store when you can complete the process online from the convenience of your home or office.

To "port" (ok, keep) your existing phone number, your current phone number needs to be active, so don't cancel your old service before you put in the request to keep your number with your new service provider. Your old service will automatically be cancelled when your "port" request is finished.

If you are presently in a one or two-year contract with your current carrier and you "port" (switch) your number to a new carrier, you may be charged an early termination fee by your old carrier. So you should contact your current carrier and ask what the charges would be if you were to cancel your service now. It may make economic sense to wait, so definitely check.

Fax numbers can to be ported to a wireless phone but 800 and pager numbers cannot be moved to a wireless phone.

Also, just so you're clear, keeping your cell number is "local" service only, in other words, within your actual metro cell phone service area. If you're planning a move from New York to LA, you won't be able to keep your local number.

Although you will be able to keep your cell number, more than likely, you will NOT be able to keep your old phone with a new carrier, as most carriers have unique equipment that only work on their networks.

On average, transferring a cell number, wireless to wireless takes about 3 hours. However, transferring a landline to a cell number can take up to 3 days. These times are estimations based upon everything running smoothly, which most of the time it does.

There is no additional charge to take your number with you to a new carrier. If you are still under contract, remember to check whether you have any early termination fee.
